Lee Valley VeloPark hosts trampolining for the first time in history

Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th November saw the Trampoline and DMT League presented by Tracks 2000 come to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the League Finals 2016. The event, hosted by Lee Valley VeloPark, attracted a record number of participants. Over 650 gymnasts took to the floor of the velodrome in what proved to be the most spectacular event in the League’s history.

The League was set up in 2014 to raise the bar for the sport in the UK by providing new competition experiences and a stage on which to perform new moves and routines for the sport’s grassroots through to the elite competitors.

The event showcased a thrilling display of gymnastics disciplines incorporating individual, synchronised and double mini trampolining and attracting over 2000 spectators and competitors to the arena, including former rowing World Champion and double Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell OBE. Excited by the unconventional use for the London 2012 Olympic venue, James commented:

“One of the best things about today is that the Olympic venues are getting used. There are only so many cycling events that can take place here so it’s great that it’s used like this too! That’s the whole thing about having the Games here; using the facilities afterwards. During the Olympics everyone said the atmosphere was amazing and today you can feel it. There is a real buzz when people are competing.”

On the first day, the successful 2016 League Series qualifiers competed routines and passes for a place in the next day’s top 8 final. Sunday was the highlight of the weekend with the synchronised and disability trampoline events taking place in the morning followed by the individual finals in the afternoon concluding with the prestigious presentation ceremony.

After exceptionally close competitions, Kameron Reid and Sally Stevens, both of Edgbarrow Trampoline Club, were crowned the Men’s and Ladies Super League champions respectively. The double mini trampoline Super League titles were taken by Daniel Berridge of Heart of England Trampoline Club and Megan Cummins of Propulsion Trampoline Club. All the the Super League winners received a cash prize of £300 donated by the League sponsors to support their continued sporting development.

The League is characterised by it’s fun and energetic events. In a surreal turn of events, a calm fell over the arena as 2000 spectators and competitors froze in silence for their attempt at the ‘mannequin challenge’; a current trend sweeping the internet.

Commentating the event was former Team GB trampolinist, 2013 synchronised trampolining World Champion and London 2012 Olympic Reserve, Amanda Parker:

“In just 3 years it is incredible to see how the League Series has exploded with popularity and is proactively supporting the development of GB’s future athletes. The event was incredible. I’ve competed at World Championships, World Cups and numerous internationals. The atmosphere of the weekend easily rivalled these and I can’t wait to see what happens in the future for the League.”
